SMOKING CESSATION PROGRAM OFFERED AT CREIGHTON AREA HEALTH SERVICES

As part of the state wide “Tobacco FREE Nebraska” program, Creighton Area Health Services offers a smoking cessation program for all area residents. Sue McManigal, RN, is in charge of the program. “At CAHS, we offer private, individual consulting to anyone in the public sector who needs help in quitting smoking.” McManigal continues, “By working on a private, individual basis, people can really get the help they need with a program tailored to their specific needs.”

The Tobacco FREE Nebraska (TFN) program works to help people quit, eliminate exposure to second hand smoke, keep youth from starting, and reach underserved populations. Tobacco use is the single most preventable cause of death and disease.

Every year Nebraska spends $605 per person, no matter their age, for smoking related medical expenses and lost productivity. Annual smoking related medical costs in Nebraska are $537 million. In 2003, smoking related health conditions accounted for 47,256 individual hospital cases in Nebraska and 2,300 deaths.

At Creighton Area Health Services, the smoking cessation program is offered with no charge to those participating. For more information and to begin a private individual smoking cessation program, contact Sue McManigal, RN at CAHS at 402-358-5700.
